Fabric Repair

How to repair a hole in your plane.

If you have a big hole or a small hole the process will be the same.
Remove all the paint with MEK, down to the fabric.  Give yourself about 2 inches all around the hole.   Select fabric to cover the hole.
Check for size, then fray the edges by pulling out the threads out, and lay it over the hole to check one more time.

Using a small brush, cover the outside of the hole with straight Aircraft glue of your choice.  (I
use the poly system.) Let it dry.   Now, lay the patch over the hole and brush on a layer of  glue and MEK (mixed 50/50)  around the outside of the repair area.  This mixture will soak thru the fabric and the dried glue will reactivate and bond the fabric to the aircraft.

When the patch has dried,  shrink the material with a hot iron about 300 degrees.  DO
NOT use a heat gun!  With a heat gun you cannot regulate the temp.

Next you will brush on a coat of polybrush, this will seal the fabric and help the repair blend in, or smooth out.  When this is dry you are ready for primer and paint.  I have been using latex  paint for years with great results. I brush on a coat or two of flat gray, when this is dry, I
finish with the final color top coat.  The patch will be almost invisible. You should stay with whatever you painted your plane with for best results.  However a good paint store can mix up some latex paint just for your repair work.
